Understanding Non-Attended Cremation

A Simple and Dignified Farewell

Choosing how to say goodbye to a loved one is a deeply personal decision. While many families choose a traditional funeral service with family and friends present, others prefer a simpler approach that focuses on dignity, practicality, and affordability.

A non-attended cremation, sometimes referred to as a direct cremation, offers a respectful farewell without a funeral service or mourners present. At Stephen M Godber Funerals, we understand that every family has different wishes, which is why we offer a range of cremation options to suit individual needs and circumstances.

What Is a Non-Attended Cremation?

A non-attended cremation is a cremation that takes place without a funeral service and without family or friends attending the crematorium. It provides a simple, respectful option for those who prefer a private farewell or wish to hold a separate memorial gathering at a later date.

Our Cremation Only – No Funeral Service, No Mourners Present package includes everything needed to ensure your loved one is cared for with dignity and professionalism throughout the process.

This package includes:

  • A natural coffin
  • A Pilato Mercedes hearse to convey the coffin to Waseley Hills Crematorium
  • Professional pallbearers
  • Bringing your loved one into our care during office hours (within 10 miles)
  • Preparation, washing and dressing of your loved one
  • An appointment to view your loved one in our private Chapel of Rest
  • Professional funeral director services
  • Crematorium fees at Waseley Hills Crematorium
  • A poem or prayer read by our Funeral Director
  • Returning cremated remains in a scatter tube

The total cost of this service is £1,800.

Why Families Choose a Non-Attended Cremation

There are many reasons why families choose a non-attended cremation.

  • Simplicity - Some individuals express a wish for a straightforward farewell without the formality of a traditional funeral service.
  • Cost Considerations - A non-attended cremation is generally the most affordable cremation option available, helping families manage costs while still ensuring their loved one receives respectful care.
  • Flexibility - Many families choose to organise their own celebration of life, memorial service, or scattering ceremony at a time and place that feels meaningful to them.
  • Personal Preference - Some people prefer a private farewell, while others may have limited family nearby or wish to avoid the pressure of organising a larger funeral gathering.

Alternative Cremation Options

While a non-attended cremation provides a simple farewell, some families prefer the opportunity to attend a service with close relatives and friends.

The Close Family Cremation

This option includes a 10-minute attended service at Waseley Hills Crematorium for up to eight mourners. Designed for immediate family members, it provides a quiet and intimate opportunity to say goodbye while keeping arrangements simple.

The Intimate Cremation

For families wishing to invite a slightly larger group, our Intimate Cremation includes a 20-minute service with attendance for up to 20 mourners. This allows more time for readings, prayers, or personal reflections while maintaining a close family atmosphere.

The Simple Cremation

This package offers a fully personalised funeral service with your choice of date and attendance. It includes an officiant, online funeral notice, donation collection service, crematorium fees, and bereavement counselling support.

The Signature Cremation

For those seeking complete flexibility and personalisation, our Signature Cremation package includes your choice of crematorium, date, and time, unlimited attendance, a limousine, floral tribute, bespoke order of service booklets, and additional family support services.
